I gave two presentations in a class. One of them was my assignment, and the other one was not an obligation, but I wanted to present. In terms of the latter, I could choose any topic and decided to introduce Japanese. Here\u2019s the script of the presentation below. As you know, I was born and raised in Japan, so Japanese is my native language. The topic that I would like to present is \u201cThe Difference Between Japanese and English\u201d. If I were to talk about all of the differences between them, it would take 24 hours, so I\u2019ve chosen three differences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an overview.<\/span><\/p>\n

1) Vocabulary<\/span><\/p>\n

2) How to describe oneself<\/span><\/p>\n

3) Presentation<\/span><\/p>\n

Let me explain the first point. First of all, I would like to introduce one Japanese word: \u201c<\/span>Omoshiroi<\/span><\/i>\u201d. This word contains two meanings. One meaning is fun. The other meaning is interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a quiz for you. If I say that Disney Land is \u201c<\/span>Omoshiroi<\/span><\/i>\u201d, does it mean fun or interesting? The answer is obviously fun.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the second quiz. If I say that this book is \u201c<\/span>Omoshiroi<\/span><\/i>\u201d, does it mean fun or interesting? The answer is probably interesting, but it could also be fun.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That\u2019s why, Japanese people sometimes ask a speaker when they can\u2019t understand if \u201cOmoshiroi<\/em>\u201d indicates fun or interesting. How annoying!<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the final quiz. If I say that studying is \u201c<\/span>Omoshiroi<\/span><\/i>\u201d, does it mean fun or interesting? Probably the answer changes depending on the person. In my case, the answer is both. When I study my favorite subject, I feel it is not only interesting but also fun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, the concepts of fun and interesting are related. That\u2019s why \u201c<\/span>Omoshiroi<\/span><\/i>\u201d contains both meanings, in my opinion.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s move on to the second topic. The topic is how to describe oneself. <\/span>In English, when we describe ourselves, we use \u201dI\u201d. For example, \u201cI am Japanese\u201d, \u201cI am talking\u201d, and \u201cI love you\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However, Japanese speakers can use several different words to describe themselves. <\/span>Typical ways are; \u201c<\/span>Watashi<\/span><\/i>\u201d, \u201c<\/span>Watakushi<\/span><\/i>\u201d, \u201c<\/span>Boku<\/span><\/i>\u201d, \u201c<\/span>Ore<\/span><\/i>\u201d, and \u201c<\/span>Zibun<\/span><\/i>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Women Usually use \u201c<\/span>Watashi<\/span><\/i>\u201d. At the same time, some girls use their names. For example, if I were Rola, I could say \u201cRola don\u2019t like this food\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The meaning of \u201c<\/span>Watashi<\/span><\/i> don\u2019t like this food\u201d is the same as \u201cRola don\u2019t like this food\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However, the impression is different because the people who say \u201cRola don\u2019t like this food\u201d are basically the people who love themselves so much.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How about men? Men usually use \u201c<\/span>Watashi<\/span><\/i>\u201d, \u201c<\/span>Boku<\/span><\/i>\u201d, or \u201c<\/span>Ore<\/span><\/i>\u201d. As well as about women, the impressions of the three words are different. \u201c<\/span>Watashi<\/span><\/i>\u201d is a formal word, \u201c<\/span>Boku<\/span><\/i>\u201d is a casual word, the impression of \u201c<\/span>Ore<\/span><\/i>\u201d is childish and wild. When I worked in Japan, I used \u201cWatashi<\/em>\u201d, when I talked with friends who are not best friends, I used \u201c<\/span>Boku<\/span><\/i>\u201d, when I talked with best friends, I used \u201c<\/span>Ore<\/span><\/i>\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some adults use \u201c<\/span>Ore<\/span><\/i>\u201d even in formal conversations. In my opinion, this kind of people wants to be seen as wild people or young ones.<\/span><\/p>\n

How complicated! Whereas there is a benefit. By using these words properly, Japanese speakers can show the relationship between speakers and listers, and they can also express their personality.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, I would like to talk about presentation style.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As you know, there are some methods of making a presentation in English. For example, how to draw attention in an introduction part, how to show the conclusion effectively, how to manage body language.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I heard that children in Canada have practiced this so many times since they were elementary school students.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In contrast, there are few methods of making a presentation in Japanese. In fact, I\u2019ve had few opportunities to present in front of audiences since I was an elementary school student or a high school student.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Therefore, there are a lot of Japanese people who are not good at presenting. As a result, the presentation by Japanese people tends to be boring, and audiences may even fall asleep during presentations.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is clear that an interesting and fun presentation is better than a boring one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However, interesting and fun presentations take a disadvantage, as speakers who are good at capturing attention may be evaluated highly, even if their content is not strong. To create a better society, what they say is more important than how they say it. On that point, Japanese people tend to focus more on what presenters say rather than how they present.<\/span><\/p>\n
