On Wednesday, December 17th, 2025, I got up around 10:00 a.m. PST and went out in the afternoon to walk around Stanley Park.<\/span><\/p>\n

As I walked along English Bay, I saw people who seemed to be birders observing birds along the shore of the bay. For example, I spotted gulls fighting over a crab that one of them had caught.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A group of diving ducks was floating on the bay, and I found their blackish bodies cool-looking. They were females, either Common Goldeneyes or Barrow\u2019s Goldeneyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Speaking of Goldeneyes, a professional women\u2019s hockey team in Vancouver that is playing its inaugural season this year is named the Vancouver Goldeneyes. According to their website, \u201cThe name Goldeneyes draws inspiration from the Common Goldeneye, a striking bird native to British Columbia\u2019s coastal waters and forested lakes.\u201d This surprised me, because before I learned about Common Goldeneyes, the logo and name of the franchise had made me imagine that goldeneyes were raptors or imaginary birds rather than ducks.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
