On Friday, January 16th, 2026, I got up around 8:30 a.m. PST and went out in the morning.<\/span><\/p>\n

The place I visited that day was the UBC Botanical Garden. Although I had expected to see interesting trees, another thing stood out to me while exploring the area. It was a small wooden structure with a toilet installed in the forest of the garden.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The toilet is a type of composting toilet called the MycoToilet. A sign next to it explained that it \u201cuses mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms, to convert solid waste into soil.\u201d According to the UBC website, it is waterless and can be installed in areas without plumbing.<\/p>\n

I was impressed by how comfortable it was to use. This impression may come from the stylish exterior and interior of the small building. Although I had assumed that composting toilets are smelly, I did not notice any unpleasant odor. According to the UBC website, the toilet was installed last year, so I am curious whether it will continue to provide a satisfying experience for visitors even a few years from now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
