現地時間2025年2月17日（月）、午前11時に起きた。16時半に家を出て、弓道の練習に向かった。
今日は「ファミリーデー」という祝日だ。ホストマザーによると、ファミリーデーは比較的最近に始まったものだという。もしファミリーデーがなかったら、正月から次の祝日まで約3カ月も祝日の空白期間が生じることになり、その空白期間を埋める意味で「貴重な祝日」と言えるかもしれない。
ホストマザーは私に、バンクーバーの博物館に行くことを勧めてくれた。今日は入場料が無料だからだ。結局、時間がなく行くことはできなかったが、別の機会に行ってみたいと思う。今回に限らず、ホストマザーはイベント情報をいつも確認しており、私に教えてくれる。
話は変わって、スポーツのイベントについて。現在、アイスホッケーの国際大会「4 Nations Face-Off」が開催中だ。アイスホッケーの強豪である4か国、フィンランド、スウェーデン、アメリカ、カナダが出場している。
この大会の存在を最近まで知らなかった私だが、今ではちょっと興味が湧いている。なぜ、プロリーグのシーズン中に国際大会を開催するのだろうか。なぜ、4か国しか参加していないのだろうか。そういった不思議な点がいくつかあり、興味をそそられる。
On Monday, February 17th, 2025, I got up at 11:00 a.m. PST and left home at 4:30 p.m. for Japanese archery practice.
Today is a holiday called Family Day. My host mother told me that this holiday was established relatively recently. If there were still no holiday in February, there would be a long gap between New Year’s and the next holiday, Good Friday, in April.
My host mother suggested that I go to a museum in Vancouver since admission was free today. She always keeps up with events in Metro Vancouver and recommended that I visit one—but in the end, I didn’t go.
By the way, an international ice hockey competition called the 4 Nations Face-Off is currently being held. I hadn’t heard of this tournament before, but I find it interesting for a few reasons. I wonder why it is being held during the professional league season. Additionally, only four countries—Finland, Sweden, the United States, and Canada—are participating, which is uncommon for a top-tier international sports event, as far as I know.
