現地時間2025年1月30日（木）、正午に起きた。ホストマザーが旅行から帰ってきたこの日、私は一日中家で過ごした。
カナダの統計情報を調査した。昨日と同様に、今回もテーマは「移民」。昨日はバンクーバー周辺の各都市における、移民の割合を可視化し、今日は移民の出身国に注目した。
用いたデータは、カナダ政府が公開する、2021年の国勢調査のデータ。下の地図では、国ごとの円の大きさが、その国からの移民数を示している。同じデータを基に、棒グラフも載せた。
バンクーバーやリッチモンド、バーナビーでは、中国系移民の圧倒的な多さが見て取れる。街の様子を見ればこの傾向は納得できるし、地元の人から聞く話とも一致している。
これらの都市と比較すると、サレーとニューウェストミンスターでは主要な移民層が異なる。サレーではインド系が中国系を大きく上回り、ニューウェストミンスターでは中国系よりもフィリピン系が多い。サレーの話は有名だが、ニューウェストミンスターの傾向については、私は知らなかった。これらの東側の地域で、なぜ中国系が1位ではないのか気になるところだ。
コキットラムの結果も興味深い。中国が1位に立っているのはバンクーバーなどの都市と一緒だが、2位と3位には韓国とイランが入っている点は、他の都市と違う特徴だ。
On Thursday, January 30th, 2025, I got up at noon PST. I stayed home all day. My host mother returned home from her trip.
Like yesterday, I researched statistical information about Canada. This time, I focused on the same theme as before: immigration. While I visualized the immigrant population in various cities around Vancouver yesterday, today I explored their countries of origin.
As I did yesterday, I used the 2021 Census Profile data published by the Government of Canada. In the map below, the larger the bubble on a country, the higher the number of immigrants from that country. Additionally, bar charts present another perspective by highlighting the top three countries of origin.
First, these visualizations indicate that China is the dominant country of origin for immigrants in Vancouver, Richmond, and Burnaby. This finding aligns with what I have observed in daily life and heard from local sources.
However, compared to these cities, the predominant immigrant groups in Surrey and New Westminster differ. In Surrey, Indian immigrants far exceed Chinese ones, while in New Westminster, Filipino immigrants outnumber Chinese ones. The former is widely recognized, but I was previously unaware of the latter trend. I am curious why Chinese immigrants are relatively less concentrated in these eastern areas.
The results for Coquitlam are also interesting. Like other cities, China is the top country of origin, but the second and third most common countries are Korea and Iran—both of which are less prominent sources of immigration in other cities.
