現地時間2025年1月4日（土）、午前11時半ごろに起きた。13時半に家を出て、弓道の練習へ向かった。
今日の稽古は特別だった。いつもの練習では基本的に20射もひかないが、今日は1人当たり108射ひいた。いわゆる「108射会」という行事で、日本の年末の伝統となっている。私も高校生の頃にやっていた。
約8時間をかけ、自分を含む10人が108射を完走した。初心者は的に向かって矢を放つのではなく、短い距離にある巻藁に向かって、108回矢を放った。
数人のメンバーが50%以上の的中率を記録した。一方、自分は約15%だった。絶望的な数字だが、的中率が低い原因は分かっているので、それほど落ち込んではいない。むしろ感じたことは、この1年で的中率がどれほど下がったかだ。例えば、屋久島で約1年前の1月6日に108射ひいた際は55本的中した。下手になったとは思わないが、的中させる感覚が明らかに失われつつある。
On Saturday, January 4th, 2025, I got up around 11:30 a.m. PST and left my house at 1:30 p.m. to go to Japanese archery practice.
Today’s practice was special because each member shot 108 arrows, far more than in a regular practice, where we usually shoot fewer than 20 arrows in a day. The 108-arrow shooting is a tradition in some Kyudo societies in Japan, and I had experienced it when I was a high school student.
10 experienced members, including myself, completed the 108 arrows, and beginner members shot at the makiwara, which is another practice method instead of using a real target. It took us about 8 hours to complete the shooting.
Some members hit the target more than 50% of the time, while I hit about 15%. I knew the reason why I couldn’t hit the target, so I was not too sad. I realized how much my hitting percentage had decreased in the last year. For example, I shot 108 arrows on January 6th last year in Yakushima and hit 55 times. I don’t think that my skills have become worse, but my sense for hitting the target was obviously declining.
