現地時間2024年11月25日（月）、午前6時半ごろに起床した。午前9時ごろに家を出て、近所を散歩した。
見たことのない鳥を見かけた。メキシコマシコだと思う。赤い体が特徴的だった。
ハシボソキツツキにも遭遇した。こちらの体にも赤い部分がある。
私は今まで、雄よりも雌のハシボソキツツキを目にすることの方が多かった。私が持っている図鑑「Peterson Field Guide to Birds of Western North America」（ロジャー・トリー・ピーターソン著）には、「雄には赤い口ひげがある」と書いてある。
この本にはメキシコマシコも載っている。イラストを見る限り、雄は赤い体をしているが、雌は茶色い体をしているそうだ。
ハシボソキツツキもメキシコマシコも、雄の方が雌よりも目立つ姿をしている。
On Monday, November 25th, 2024, I got up around 6:30 a.m. PST and left my house around 9:00 a.m.
While walking around the neighborhood, I spotted a bird I had never seen before. It might have been a House Finch.
Additionally, I observed another bird with a red marking on its body. It could have been a Northern Flicker, which belongs to the woodpecker family.
I have seen female Northern Flickers more often than males. In Peterson Field Guide to Birds of Western North America by Roger Tory Peterson, it is noted that “male has red mustache.” The book also mentions the House Finch. According to the illustrations of this species, while the male has a red body, the female is brown. I realized that males of both species are more striking in appearance than the females.
