現地時間2025年2月15日（金）、午前6時30分半に起きた。インビクタス・ゲームを観戦するため、午前7時半に家を出た。
インビクタス・ゲームは、負傷・病気・障害を持つ現役軍人および退役軍人のためのスポーツイベントだ。これまで、2014年にロンドン、2016年にオーランド、2017年にトロント、2018年にシドニー、2022年にハーグ、2023年にデュッセルドルフで開催してきた。
今大会の会場はバンクーバーとウィスラーで、期間は今月の8日から16日まで。25か国の選手が、車いすバスケットボール、アルペンスキー、水泳など、11種類の競技に参加している。
私はバンクーバー・コンベンションセンターで、シッティングバレーボールの試合を3試合観戦した。オーストラリア対カナダ、ウクライナ対ドイツ、アメリカ対ルーマニアの試合だ。
この競技は一般的なバレーボールとほぼ同じルールだが、違う部分もいくつかある。コートは小さく、ネットは低い。選手は座ったままプレーする。片脚がなかったり、片腕がなかったりする選手はいたものの、健常者と比べてさほどハンデがあるようには見えなかった。男女が一緒にプレーしており、性別による壁もないように思えた。
会場はとても賑やかだった。実況の人や音楽が楽しい雰囲気をつくりだし、まるでアメリカのプロスポーツの試合のよう。観客の熱気も高く、特にカナダとウクライナのサポーターが盛り上がっていた。ウクライナの国旗を振りながら歓声を上げていた人たちは、ウクライナ移民だったのではないだろうか。もしそうであれば、バンクーバーは国際的なイベントの開催に適した都市と言えるだろう。多様な移民が多く住んでおり、今回のウクライナのように、集客がしやすいからだ。以前、マイアミでWBCを観戦した際にも、同様のことを感じた。
On Friday, February 15th, 2025, I got up at 6:30 a.m. PST and left home at 7:30 a.m. to attend the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025.
The Invictus Games is a sporting event for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans. It has been held in London (2014), Orlando (2016), Toronto (2017), Sydney (2018), The Hague (2022), and Düsseldorf (2023). This year’s event takes place from February 8 to February 16. Athletes from 25 nations are competing in 11 different sports, including wheelchair basketball, alpine skiing, and swimming.
At the Vancouver Convention Centre, I watched three matches of sitting volleyball: Australia vs. Canada, Ukraine vs. Germany, and the United States vs. Romania. This sport is similar to traditional volleyball, but all players sit on a smaller court, and the net is lower. Male and female athletes played together, and I saw players who were missing a leg or an arm. From what I observed, not only were the barriers between disabled and non-disabled players minimal, but gender barriers also seemed almost nonexistent.
The venue was vibrant, with music and live commentary creating an electrifying atmosphere, much like a professional sports event in the United States. The crowd was full of energy, especially the Canadian and Ukrainian supporters. I got the impression that many Ukrainian immigrants were present, enthusiastically cheering and holding up their national flags. If that’s the case, Vancouver is an ideal city for international events due to its large and diverse immigrant population. I noticed a similar dynamic when I attended the World Baseball Classic in Miami, USA.
