現地時間2025年3月21日（金）、午前9時に起きた。午後は散歩に出て、夕方にはウェスト・エドモントン・モールを訪れた。エドモントンで人気の観光地だ。
超巨大モール
旅行前のある日、バンクーバーの弓道クラブのメンバーと話をしていた。あるメンバーがウェスト・エドモントン・モールに行くよう勧めてくれた。その人は子どもの頃、このショッピングモールがディズニーランドよりも好きだったそうだ。
今日実際に訪れてみて、私はその意味が理解できた。ここは巨大なエンターテインメント施設で、単なる買い物施設の域を超えていた。アイススケート場、プール、スワンボートに乗ることができるアトラクション、屋内のカートレース場など、家族連れの楽しめる施設が数多くあった。
私はしばらく、アイスリンクの様子を眺めていた。子どもたちがアイスホッケーの試合をやっており、観客は100人以上いただろう。リンクの周りだけでなく、フードコートなどの施設内のいたるところが賑わっていた。平日とは思えない混雑具合だった。
公式サイトによると、モールの広さは530万平方フィート（約49ヘクタール）だという。東京ドーム約10個分にあたる。店舗数は800以上あり、スターバックスやLidsのようにモール内に複数の店舗を構える店もあった。見た限り、ここで買えないものはないように思う。
ジグザグの図書館
モールへ行く前、ダウンタウンからエドモントンの東端まで歩いた。工業施設が集まっている地区のようだ。
地元のホッケーチーム「Oilers」の名前が示すように、この街は石油産業が有名。そこで私は、その産業に関連する場所を訪れたかった。エドモントンの弓道クラブのメンバーにその話をしたところ、エドモントンの東側へ行ってみるといいと勧めてくれた。
工場らしき建物を、外から眺めた。CelaneseやImperial Oilなどの企業の名前が確認できた。ただし、それらの工場が石油産業に直接関係しているかどうかは分からない。
道中、エドモントン公共図書館のキャピラノ支所の前を通った。その独特な外観に惹かれて、中に入ってみることにした。
この図書館の特徴的な部分は、ジグザグした断面に見て取れる。ある尖がりの下には座席、別の尖がりには本棚、最後の尖がりの下には図書館の主要機能以外の部屋がある。設計を担当したPatkau Architectsは公式サイトのなかで、「3つのピークは、それぞれの規模、機能、自然光、眺望に応じて配置されている」と説明している。
On Thursday, March 21st, 2025, I got up at 9:00 a.m. MDT and went for a walk in the afternoon. In the evening, I visited West Edmonton Mall, one of the most popular destinations in Edmonton.
West Edmonton Mall
When I told members of the Japanese archery club in Vancouver about my trip to Edmonton, one member recommended that I visit West Edmonton Mall. He said that as a kid, he used to like it even more than Disneyland.
After visiting, I understood what he meant. It felt more like a massive entertainment complex than a shopping mall, with attractions such as an ice rink, a water park, a paddle boat swan ride, an indoor race track, and more.
I spent some time watching a kids’ ice hockey game at the rink. Surprisingly, there were over 100 spectators. Not only the rink area but also other places in the mall, such as the food courts, were quite crowded—even though it was a weekday.
From what I saw, it felt like there was nothing I couldn’t buy there. According to its website, the mall covers 5.3 million square feet and houses over 800 stores and services. I even found some shops with multiple locations within the mall, like Starbucks and Lids.
Public Library
Before going to the mall, I walked from downtown Edmonton to the city’s eastern edge, where industrial facilities are located. As the name of the local hockey club suggests, the city is known for its oil industry, so I wanted to visit places related to it. When I mentioned this to a member of the Japanese archery club in Edmonton, he suggested I check out that area.
I saw buildings that looked like plants for companies such as Celanese and Imperial Oil, though I wasn’t sure if they were directly related to the oil industry.
While walking, I came across the Edmonton Public Library Capilano branch. Its unique exterior caught my attention, so I decided to visit.
The library’s cross-sectional shape, with multiple peaks, makes it stand out. Each peak covers a different area: one for seating, another for bookshelves, and another for rooms. According to Patkau Architects, the firm that designed it, “Each of the three peaks responds to scale, function, natural light, and view.”
