現地時間2025年3月20日（木）、午前8時に起きた。午後から散歩に出て、夜はロジャース・プレイスでアイスホッケーの試合を観戦した。ウィニペグ・ジェッツとエドモントン・オイラーズによる一戦だ。
マクデービッド選手率いる「エドモントン・オイラーズ」
エドモントンに来た目的は、ただ1つ。アイスホッケーの試合を生で観るためだ。NHLのチームがエドモントンになかったら、この街を訪れることはなかっただろう。
地元チームであるオイラーズには、コナー・マクデービッド選手が所属している。NHLが誇るスーパースターであり、今年の4 Nations Face-Offの決勝でゴールデンゴールを決めた選手だ。この試合がきっかけでアイスホッケーファンになった私としては、マクデイビッド選手ならびに同選手が所属しているチームをこの目で見たかった。
オイラーズは延長戦の末に敗れたものの、私としては大満足だった。数日前にバンクーバーで観戦した試合と比べて、選手がゴールに迫る機会をより多く見ることができた。上位チーム同士の対戦にふさわしい、見ごたえある試合だった。
お目当てのマクデービッド選手は素晴らしいプレーを見せてくれた。第2ピリオドではリンクの左側を駆け抜けてから、ゴール裏に回り、味方へパスを供給。チームの2点目につながった。それ以外の場面でも、相手守備に風穴を開けるようなプレーを観客に見せてくれた。
残念ながらマクデービッド選手は試合中に負傷したようで、第3ピリオドは姿を見せなかった。もし彼が試合終盤まで出場していたら、試合結果は違ったものになったかもしれない。
選手によるパフォーマンス以外の部分も素晴らしかった。オイラーズが得点した場面では、観客たちが一斉に手を挙げて盛り上がり、観客たちの一体感を感じた。相手チームであるジェッツのファンも、少数ながら会場で熱心に応援していた。
ピラミッド型の植物園「Muttart Conservatory」
NHLの試合を観る前、「Muttart Conservatory」を訪れた。ダウンタウンからやや離れた場所に立つ植物園だ。エドモントンの弓道クラブのメンバーが、行くことを勧めてくれた。建物の意匠が特徴的で、ピラミッド型の温室が4つ立っている。
それぞれのピラミッドには異なるテーマがある。乾燥帯の植物、熱帯の植物、温帯の植物を展示するピラミッド、そして最後の4つ目は年に数回展示が変わるピラミッドだ。
あるピラミッドから別のピラミッドへ移動すると、気付くことがある。それぞれのピラミッドが違う環境を持っているということだ。例えば熱帯のエリアは蒸し暑いのに対し、乾燥帯のエリアはからっとしていた。4つのピラミッドが独立していることは、外観の美しさだけでなく、異なる室内環境をつくりだす役割も果たしていた。
今日見た植物の中で特に目をひいたのは、Japanese snowbellことエゴノキだ。日本でなじみがある花を異国で観るのは、なぜだか特別な感じがする。外国で日本食を食べる感覚と、似ているかもしれない。
On Thursday, March 20th, 2025, I got up at 8:00 a.m. MDT and went for a walk in the afternoon. At night, I watched an ice hockey game between the Winnipeg Jets and the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place.
Oilers
Watching an ice hockey game here was my only reason for visiting Edmonton. The local team features Connor McDavid, who scored the overtime goal in the final of the 4 Nations Face-Off. That game made me a fan of the sport, so I wanted to see him and his team play in person.
What I experienced today exceeded my expectations. Although the Oilers lost in overtime, I was completely satisfied with being here. Compared to the game I watched in person last Sunday in Vancouver, there were more scoring chances today. No wonder both teams rank high in the league standings this season.
The Oilers’ captain put on a great performance. He skated down the left side of the rink, circled behind the net, and passed the puck to a teammate, resulting in their second goal. Besides that play, he broke through the defense. However, he seemed to get injured during the match and missed the third period. If he had been healthy for the entire game, the final score might have been different.
Other aspects of the game were also amazing. The crowd was electric, raising their hands whenever the Oilers scored. Not only the home team’s fans but also the Jets’ supporters were lively, even though they were few in number. I saw some people wearing Jets jerseys, and they were chanting from time to time.
Muttart Conservatory
Before the NHL game, I visited the Muttart Conservatory, which had been recommended by a member of the Japanese archery club in Edmonton. Located just outside downtown, it features a unique architectural design with four large, pyramid-shaped greenhouses.
Each pyramid has a distinct theme. One houses plants from arid regions, another showcases tropical biomes, another contains temperate-region plants, and the last one, called the Feature Pyramid, hosts rotating exhibits throughout the year. A central atrium connects all four pyramids.
Moving from one pyramid to another, I noticed that each room had its own climate. For instance, the tropical biome pyramid was hot and humid, whereas the arid biome pyramid felt dry. The division into separate rooms not only creates a striking visual effect but also helps maintain different indoor environments.
Among the many plants, the Japanese snowbell tree caught my eye. Just as eating Japanese food abroad has a certain charm, seeing flowers native to my home country in a foreign setting felt special.
