現地時間2025年3月25日（火）、午前8時に起きた。バンクーバーの友人の家を訪れ、友人の日本旅行の準備を手伝った。
昨日に続き、エドモントン旅行で印象に残ったことを書きたい。今日書くのは、エドモントン・オイラーズの本拠地「ロジャース・プレイス」についてだ。
私がカナダで見てきた建築物のなかで、最も印象的な建物だった。その斬新なデザインが、「これから何か特別なことが起こるのではないか」というワクワク感を、試合の観戦前からかき立ててくれた。
この建物を特別にしている要素は、3つあると思う。外観、建物全体の形、そしてエントランスの吹き抜けだ。
まず、シルバーに輝く外壁。茶色っぽく、古めかしい建物が多いダウンタウンのなかで、このアリーナの近代的な外観は際立っていた。
形も独特だ。上空から見て、L字型のような形をしている。「L」という字の下側にあたる部分が、アイスリンクや観客席を含む主要部分。L字の上側の部分は、建物のエントランスにあたる。
アリーナは2つの区画にまたがって立っている。両区画をつなぐ部分には、大きな吹き抜けがある。吹き抜けがあるのは建物の2階で、その下には一般道が通る。建物と道路が一体化した、珍しい場所だ。
吹き抜けのある空間には、「フォード・ホール」という名前がついている。試合前にフォード・ホールに入ると、多くの観客がセキュリティチェックを待ち、長蛇の列をつくっていた。私が訪れたことのあるスポーツ施設のなかでは、最も広い待機スペースだ。狭い場所や屋外のスペースで待つのと比べて、列に並ぶストレスがはるかに小さかった。
リンクや観客席はバンクーバーのアリーナと似ていた。ただし、これまで述べてきたような部分はまったく違った。バンクーバーとエドモントン、それぞれのアリーナを体験した私は、他のNHLチームの本拠地にも興味が湧いてきた。
On Tuesday, March 25th, 2025, I got up around 8:00 a.m. PDT. I visited a friend’s home in Vancouver to help her prepare for her upcoming trip to Japan.
Continuing from yesterday, I’d like to write about what impressed me during my trip to Edmonton last week. Today’s topic is Rogers Place, the home arena of the Edmonton Oilers.
This arena is the most impressive piece of architecture I’ve seen in Canada. Even before the hockey game began, its bold design made me feel that something special was about to happen, heightening my anticipation.
What makes this building so cool? I believe there are three key factors: the exterior, the overall shape of the building, and the entrance atrium.
The building’s silver exterior gleams. While many buildings in downtown Edmonton have a brownish tone that gives them an aged look, the arena’s modern design stands out.
Its shape is so unique that it’s hard to describe. When viewed from above, it roughly resembles an “L” shape. The lower part of the “L” contains the main area, including the ice rink and seating, while the upper part of the “L” serves as the entrance area, featuring a high-ceiling atrium.
The atrium is located on the second level and connects two separate lands. A public road runs underneath it, passing between these spaces. This unique integration of public space and architecture makes the arena an exceptional place.
When I entered the atrium, called Ford Hall, before the game, I saw many fans waiting for security checks. It was the largest waiting area I’ve ever experienced in a sports facility. Although I usually find standing in line stressful, I didn’t feel that way this time, thanks to the spacious environment and comfortable temperature.
While the ice rink and seating in Rogers Place seemed similar to those in Vancouver’s arena, the other aspects I mentioned were strikingly different. Experiencing both arenas has made me curious about the home venues of other NHL teams.
