2025年6月7日（土）、午前9時半に起きた。午前11時に家を出て、図書館へ向かった。
訪れたのは横浜市中央図書館。横浜市内で最も大きい図書館だ。市のウェブサイトによると、およそ180万冊の蔵書を誇るという。
この図書館で私は写真集を借りた。水越武さんという写真家による作品だ。最近、別の図書館で水越さんのことを初めて知り、興味が湧いた。横浜市中央図書館の豊富な蔵書のおかげで、私は4冊も水越さんの写真集を借りることができた。
私は高校生の頃も、この図書館を利用していた。1人もしくは友人と一緒に勉強した記憶がある。それから10年以上が経った今でも、昔と同じ建物で図書館は運営を続けている。館内の雰囲気も、当時と変わらない。
ここから1kmも離れていない場所には、神奈川県立図書館が立っている。こちらの図書館は、2022年に完成した現代的な施設。提供しているサービスも、いまどきな感じだ。地域の住民からすると、横浜市中央図書館と神奈川県立図書館、各自の好みや目的に応じて、利用する図書館を選べるようになっている。
On Saturday, June 7th, 2025, I got up at 9:30 a.m. and left my home at 11:00 a.m. to go to a library in Yokohama.
The library I visited was the Yokohama City Central Library, the largest library in the city. According to the city’s website, it holds about 1.8 million books.
The reason I visited the library was to borrow photobooks by Takeshi Mizukoshi, a photographer who mainly captures forests and mountains. I had recently discovered his work at another library, and I wanted to explore it more deeply. Thanks to the library’s vast collection, I was able to borrow four of his books.
As a high school student, I used to come here to study alone or with friends. The library still offers services in its classic-style building, and the atmosphere remains just as it was more than ten years ago. Less than a kilometer away, Kanagawa Prefecture built a new library building in 2022, providing a modern-style facility and services. Local residents can choose between the two libraries according to their preferences.
