2025年6月14日（土）、正午ごろに起きた。夕方に家を出て、横浜の岸根公園を訪れた。
岸根公園の池の近くでは、アカメガシワが咲いている。
園内の広場で咲いているのは、ネムノキだ。ネムノキは屋久島でも6月に咲いていた。バンクーバーにもネムノキらしき木が立っているが、その木は9月に見頃を迎えていた。ネムノキは年に2回咲くことがあるらしく、バンクーバーで私が観たのは2回目の開花だったのかもしれない。
ネムノキの花のなかで私たちの目をひく部分は、花びらではない。雄しべだという。アカメガシワにいたっては花びらがない。花のなかで目立つ部分と言えば、花びらが思い浮かぶけれど、その考えが当てはまらない木もある。
On Saturday, June 14th, 2025, I got up around noon and left home in the evening to visit Kishine Park in Yokohama.
A Japanese mallotus was blooming near a pond in the park.
In a square of the park, a Persian silk tree was covered in flowers. Looking back at previous posts on this blog, I noticed that the same species had bloomed on Yakushima Island in June as well, while a similar tree of what is probably the same species was flowering in Vancouver in September.
What stands out most among the flowers of the Persian silk tree are its stamens, not its petals. Japanese mallotus doesn’t have petals at all. These flowers show that petals are not always necessary to catch our attention.
