現地時間2025年11月24日（月）、午前5時半に起きた。夕方、弓道の練習をした。
バンクーバーのダウンタウンに電車で向かっているときのこと。私の周りに10人ほどの乗客がいて、そのうちの4人が電話で話していた。そうした乗客の姿はよく見かけるが、4人もいるのはちょっと異常だった。
彼らは誰も英語を話していなかった。これまで私が見てきた経験からすると、電車内で電話をしている人の多くは、カナダの公用語（英語とフランス語）以外の言語を話している。
バンクーバーに住んで1年以上経つが、個人的にはいまだにこの状況に慣れることができない。一見するとバンクーバーの人はあまり気にしていないような印象を受けるが、日本人ではない友人に意見を聞いてみると、マナー違反だと言っていた。
On Monday, November 24th, 2025, I got up around 5:30 a.m. PST and practiced Japanese archery in the evening.
While heading to downtown Vancouver by train, I saw four people around me talking on their phones, even though there were only about ten people nearby. Although it’s normal to see some passengers doing that, what I experienced today felt a bit more extreme than usual.
All of them were speaking languages that were neither English nor any Asian languages. Surprisingly, during my time on trains here, I rarely see people talking on the phone in English or French, even though they are Canada’s official languages.
The fact that so many people make phone calls on public transit makes me think that local people don’t really mind it. However, my friends who are not Japanese have told me that talking on the phone on trains is considered bad manners.
