フランス出身の友人と話していた時のこと。映画やミュージカルなどの話題が出た際、私が「レ・ミゼラブル」の話をしようとした。作品のタイトルを英語っぽく発音したつもりだったが、友人には通じなかった。
私が作品名のつづりを説明すると、友人はようやく理解してくれた。自分の英語の発音が悪かったのだろうか。もしくは、友人がフランス語の発音しか知らなかったのかもしれない。
英語の発音と言えば、私は 「curling（カーリング）」の発音に苦労している。「r」と「l」の音が難しく、なかなか克服できない。カーリング施設にいるときでさえ、「curling」の単語を発することにためらいを感じる。

Here’s what I experienced today when I talked with a friend of mine from France about entertainment such as movies and musicals.
Although I mentioned Les Misérables, a French novel and musical I had seen in New York, she didn’t understand what I said. After I spelled the title for her, she finally understood. I’m not sure whether my English pronunciation was incorrect or whether she only knew the French pronunciation of the title.
Speaking of English pronunciation, I always struggle with saying “curling.” Although I know it’s hard for me to handle the “r” and “l” sounds, I still can’t get them right. Even when I’m at the facility for the sport, I hesitate to say the word.
