現地時間2026年1月16日（金）、午前8時半ごろに起きた。朝から外出した。
ブリティッシュコロンビア大学（通称：UBC）の植物園を散歩した。樹木を鑑賞する目的で訪れたのだが、結果的に別のものが印象に残った。園内に設置された、小さな木質の建物だ。
この建物は、来訪者やスタッフ用のトイレ。「MycoToilet」という名前がついている。バイオトイレの一種で、建物近くの看板によると、「キノコの根の構造である菌糸を利用し、固形排泄物を土に変える」そうだ。UBCのウェブサイトによると、このトイレは水を使わず、水道設備のない場所にも設置できる。
外観や内装からは、スタイリッシュな印象を受けた。バイオトイレは臭いものだと思っていたが、ここのトイレでは不快な臭いを全く感じなかった。UBCのウェブサイトを読んだところによると、このトイレは昨年設置されたよう。数年経っても、良質な状態を保っているのか、個人的には気になる。
On Friday, January 16th, 2026, I got up around 8:30 a.m. PST and went out in the morning.
The place I visited that day was the UBC Botanical Garden. Although I had expected to see interesting trees, another thing stood out to me while exploring the area. It was a small wooden structure with a toilet installed in the forest of the garden.
The toilet is a type of composting toilet called the MycoToilet. A sign next to it explained that it “uses mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms, to convert solid waste into soil.” According to the UBC website, it is waterless and can be installed in areas without plumbing.
I was impressed by how comfortable it was to use. This impression may come from the stylish exterior and interior of the small building. Although I had assumed that composting toilets are smelly, I did not notice any unpleasant odor. According to the UBC website, the toilet was installed last year, so I am curious whether it will continue to provide a satisfying experience for visitors even a few years from now.
