カナダの地元メディアが面白いニュースを取り上げていた。バンクーバーの地下鉄建設についてのニュースだ。市内の主要道路の一部区間が、地下鉄建設工事の影響で、今日から4か月間閉鎖されるという。
メディアが焦点を当てている点は、地域ビジネスへの悪影響だ。車のアクセスが制限されることで、客足が遠のき、地元店舗の売り上げが減るおそれがある。
日本でも鉄道建設の事例はあるけれど、こうした負の側面に注目した報道は珍しいように思う。車社会であるバンクーバーだからこその切り口なのかもしれない。
On Monday, January 26th, 2026, I got up around noon PST and practiced Japanese archery in the evening.
I watched some interesting news from Canadian media about an ongoing project to build a subway network in Vancouver. Starting today, a section of Broadway, one of the city’s main roads, will be closed for the next four months due to subway construction.
One issue the media focused on was the negative impact the closure could have on local businesses, as reduced vehicle access may make it harder for customers to visit and for businesses to generate revenue.
Although it is not unusual for Japan to build new railway lines, I do not remember seeing news reports in Japan that focused on this kind of issue. I believe this is because many customers of local businesses in Vancouver tend to travel by car, so the impact of subway construction on businesses receives more attention.
