現地時間2026年2月19日（木）、午前9時ごろに起きた。スコーミッシュに住む友人の家で、午前9時ごろ起床した。
冷たく澄んだ空気のなか、一人で町をひたすら歩いた。ショッピングモールなどに立ち寄りつつ、スコーミッシュ川の川岸の、あるポイントを目指した。ハクトウワシの越冬地として有名な場所だ。
残念ながらこの越冬地でハクトウワシを見ることはできなかった。ここには、ハクトウワシの生態などについて記した看板が、多く立っている。それによると、「11月に産卵のために遡上してくるシロザケやギンザケの到来とともに、スコーミッシュ川、チェアカマス川、マムクアム川の岸辺にハクトウワシが集まり始める。サケがいなくなるまでとどまり、その時期は年によって異なる」とのことだ。
結局、群れがこの越冬地にいつまでいるのか、私には分からない。それでも、スコーミッシュに少なくとも一羽いることは、今日確認できた。一羽のハクトウワシが、空高く飛んでいた。
スコーミッシュの景色と寒さは、長野県の安曇野を彷彿させるものだった。どちらの町も、雪山がそびえ、ほどよい大きさの川が流れている。
On Thursday, February 19th, 2026, I got up around 9:00 a.m. PST at my friend’s house in Squamish.
I spent most of the day walking around the town in the crisp, cold weather. After visiting a cultural facility and a shopping mall, I arrived at a spot where a large number of bald eagles gather during a specific period each year.
Unfortunately, I didn’t see any bald eagles there. What I did gain was some basic knowledge about the raptors from the information posted on signs at the site.
According to the signs: “Eagles begin to congregate along the shores of the Squamish, Cheakamus, and Mamquam rivers with the arrival of spawning chum and coho salmon in November. They will stay until the salmon are depleted, the timing of which can vary from year to year.”
I’m not sure whether the middle of this month was too late to spot a large group of them. However, I did see one bald eagle flying high in the blue sky while walking in another area of Squamish.
As for my impression of Squamish, its scenery and cold weather reminded me of Azumino in Nagano Prefecture, since both towns have snow-covered mountains and a medium-sized, clean river.
