現地時間2024年8月23日（金）、午前7時10分に起きた。午前7時50分に家を出て、専門学校へ向かった。
今日の昼前までに提出しなければならないレポートが、朝の時点でまだ終わっていなかった。残っていたのは、剽窃チェックという作業。レポートの執筆にあたって剽窃していないことを示すため、専用のウェブサイトに文章を読み込ませる必要があった。
このウェブサイトが剽窃に関するスコアを示す。私は正直、スコアの意味を理解していないが、とにかく95％という基準値をクリアしなければならなかった。試しにレポートを読み込ませてみたところ、スコアは95％未満だった。いくつか文章を変え、なんとか基準値をクリアした。
こうしたウェブサイトを使うことに意味があるのか、疑問が残っている。理由はいくつかある。
まず、書籍から盗作しているかどうかを認識できない点。もう1つは、今回の課題において、たとえ私が文献を正しい方法で引用したり参考にしたりしたとしても、剽窃と判定されてしまう点だ。
今回はレポート内の言葉を別の表現で言い換えることで、スコアを上げた。先生がそう指導した。個人的には、このプロセスにも意義が見出せなかった。言い換えと剽窃は本質的にはあまり関係がないと思う。
ただし私がいくら不満を言ったところで、今回経験した慣習・文化は変わらない。私が適応する必要がある。
On Friday, August 23rd, 2024, I got up at 7:10 a.m. PST and left my house at 7:50 a.m. to go to my college.
My assignment, which was due by 11:30 a.m., was not finished in the morning. I had to run a plagiarism check before submitting the report. Plagiarism checks are provided by some websites.
The website indicated a score for plagiarism. I don’t understand what the score means, but in this case, it was necessary to get a score of more than 95%. The initial score I received was less than 95%. After making several adjustments and attempts, I figured out the issue, but it was a difficult challenge.
Honestly, I’m suspicious of the meaning of plagiarism checks for several reasons. First of all, plagiarism checkers can detect if authors steal information from websites but probably can’t recognize if they steal it from books. Secondly, a plagiarism checker pointed out problems even though I properly cited references and quotes. In my opinion, using references and quotations is different from stealing ideas.
To improve the score on the checker, I had to use paraphrases, but paraphrasing is more related to language skills than to plagiarism, in my opinion.
Even if I complain about the process a lot, educational culture is unlikely to change. Therefore, I have to adapt to Canadian culture.
