現地時間2024年12月25日（水）、正午に起床した。ホストマザーがクリスマスプレゼントをくれた。なんと、クリスマスカードも入っていた。12月25日の朝にプレゼントを貰うのは、私にとって約20年ぶりの出来事だった。
私とホストマザーは15時半に家を出た。ホストマザーの親戚と一緒に夕食を楽しむためだ。例年なら約20人の親戚が集まるらしいが、今年は10人だった。それでもかなりの人数だ。
七面鳥やジンジャークッキーといったクリスマスの定番料理を楽しんだ。食事のほかには、ホストマザーのお孫さんとテーブルサッカーで遊んだ。いかにも「西洋の暮らし」という感じだった。
個人的に嬉しかったのは、親戚の数人が梅酒を気に入ってくれたことだ。この梅酒は、私が前日に日本食材店で購入したもの。もともと私は何も持参するつもりはなかったが、コロンビア人の友人が手土産を持っていくべきだと助言してくれたため、この梅酒を持参した。友人の助言は間違いなく正しかった。
On Wednesday, December 25th, 2024, I got up at noon PST. My host mother gave me a Christmas present, including a Christmas card. It was the first time I had received a Christmas present in about 20 years.
She and I left our house at 3:30 to visit her sister’s house and have Christmas dinner together with relatives. In a typical year, about 20 relatives gather at the house, but this year there were 10, which was still quite a number of people.
We had traditional Christmas dishes, such as turkey and gingerbread cookies. Besides the food, I played foosball with my host mother’s grandson, which made me feel like I was truly living in a Western country.
What made me happy at dinner was that some family members seemed to enjoy the Japanese plum wine. I bought it yesterday at a Japanese grocery store. I hadn’t thought about bringing a gift to the party, but my Colombian friend told me I should bring something special, so I chose the wine. The suggestion from this friend was absolutely right.
