現地時間2025年1月1日（水）、13時半に起きた。外出はしなかった。窓から外を見る限り、雨は降っていないようだったが、空はどんよりと曇っていた。正月ごろの東京の澄み切った空が恋しい。
年末年始にカナダで暮らすのは今回が初めて。2025年になった瞬間、町のあちこちから歓声が聞こえてきた。歓声に呼応するように、色々な場所で花火が打ち上がった。10分以上、どこかしらで花火の音が鳴っていた。
午後はホストマザーの掃除を手伝った。台所に虫が来ないようにするためだ。というのも毎晩、蟻のような小さな虫たちがキッチンを歩き回っている。10匹以上現れた夜もあった。なぜか昼間は姿を見せず、私が気付くまでホストマザーは虫がいることを知らなかった。
虫を追い出すのに効果があるかは分からないが、カビを除去したり、隙間を透明テープで埋めたりした。状況が好転するか、行方を見守ろう。
On Wednesday, January 1st, 2025, I got up at 1:30 p.m. PST and didn’t go outside. It didn’t seem to rain today, but it was cloudy. I miss the clear skies at the beginning of January in Tokyo.
It was my first time experiencing New Year’s in Canada. When 2025 arrived, my neighbors were filled with excitement, and I heard cheers from somewhere in town. At the same time, fireworks went off from various locations, and their sound echoed for more than 10 minutes.
In the afternoon, I helped my host mother clean the kitchen to prevent bugs from coming in. Every night, tiny insects like ants appear and crawl around the kitchen. For some reason, they don’t come out during the daytime, so my host mother hadn’t noticed them until I found them and told her.
We tried to remove the mold in the kitchen and seal the gaps with transparent tape. Let’s see if the situation improves.
