現地時間2025年1月8日（水）、午前4時ごろに起きた。午前10時半に家を出て、ブリティッシュコロンビア大学（通称：UBC）へ向かった。
友人と訪れたのは、UBC人類学博物館。以前、別の友人と話していた際、その人がこの博物館について話しており、それがきっかけで私は興味を持った。
この博物館は主に、バンクーバー周辺の先住民族に関する品々を展示していた。住宅の柱や食器などを見てみると、私を含め、先住民ではない人が使うものよりもだいぶ大きいことが分かった。家もかなり大きかったのだろう。
建物の一角に、大きな地図があった。太平洋岸北西部の先住民グループの分布を示す地図だ。色々な民族がいて、さらにはたくさんの言語が存在することを、私はその地図を通じて知った。
博物館を後にした私は、大学キャンパス内の書店を訪れた。さほど広くはない本屋だが、先住民に関する書籍は品揃えが充実しており、店内の目立つ場所に本が並んでいた。もう1つ私が気付いたのは、キャンパス内の標識だ。英語に加えて、先住民の言語での表記もあり、ここからも先住民族を尊重する姿勢がうかがえた。
On Wednesday, January 8th, 2025, I got up around 4:00 a.m. PST and left my house at 10:30 a.m. to go to UBC. After meeting up with my friend and having lunch with him, we visited the Museum of Anthropology at UBC.
I had previously talked with another friend who mentioned this museum, which made me curious about it.
I found that this museum mainly displays items related to Indigenous peoples around Vancouver. Some items, such as interior house posts and house dishes, are larger than those typically used by non-Indigenous people in modern society. This made me imagine that Indigenous peoples’ houses must have been huge.
What surprised me was the large number of Indigenous groups in the Pacific Northwest Coast, as shown on a map in the museum. I also hadn’t realized that several different languages are spoken by Indigenous peoples.
After leaving the museum, I visited a bookstore on the UBC campus. Although the shop isn’t very large, it prominently features many books related to Indigenous peoples. Additionally, I noticed that signs on campus are written not only in English but also in Indigenous languages.
