ニューウェストミンスターミュージアムを訪れた。ニューウェストミンスター駅前のアンビルセンター内にある小さな博物館で、この町の歴史を紹介している。私にとって訪れるのは、今回が初めてだった。先住民に関する展示があるのではないかと期待していたが、そのテーマを扱った展示はごくわずかだった。
印象に残ったのは、中国系移民の歴史、特に人頭税に関する説明だ。1800年代から1900年代にかけて、中国系移民はカナダに入国するために税金を支払わなければならなかった。展示によると、人頭税の額は年によって異なり、例えば1903年には500ドルに引き上げられたという。当時の500ドルは、家が2軒買えるほどの金額だったそうだ。
帰宅後、この人頭税についてホストマザーに聞いてみたところ、彼女はこの話題について知っていた。カナダでは一般的な歴史なのかもしれない。
On Saturday, January 23rd, 2025, I got up at 4:00 a.m. PST and left home in the afternoon to walk around the neighborhood.
I visited the New Westminster Museum at the Anvil Centre, in front of New Westminster Station. It was my first time visiting. Although I expected to see displays about Indigenous people, there were only a few sections featuring this theme.
The most striking part of the museum was the explanation of the history of Chinese immigrants, including the Head Tax. Between the 1800s and 1900s, they had to pay a fee to enter Canada. According to the exhibit, the amount of the Head Tax varied by year. For example, in 1903, it was raised to $500, which was enough to buy two homes at the time.
After returning home, I talked with my host mother about this topic, and she was already familiar with it. It seems to be a well-known part of history in this country.
