現地時間2025年3月4日（火）、朝に寝て、16時半に起きた。一日中家にいた。
テレビでアイスホッケーの試合を観た。エドモントン・オイラーズ対アナハイム・ダックスの試合だ。私としてはオイラーズの勝利を予想していた。昨シーズン、スタンリー・カップ決勝に進出した強豪だからだ。だが蓋を開けてみれば、結果は2対6でオイラーズの完敗で終わった。オイラーズは選手の集中力が欠けていたり、選手同士の連携が機能していなかったりしていたように見えた。
そんな負け試合のなか、オイラーズのキャプテンであるコナー・マクデービッド選手は1ゴール1アシストを記録した。NHLを代表するスターである同選手の、流れるような美しいゴールは、観る価値十分のプレーだった。
多くの日本人はマクデービッド選手の名前を聞いたことがないかもしれない。だが、前回のワールド・ベースボール・クラシックに興奮したというのは、日本人との共通点と言えるだろう。Sportsnet の記事によると、トラウト選手と大谷選手の対戦について「本当にクールだと思った。こういう最高レベルの対決は、私たちが長い間、アイスホッケーに求めてきたものだよね？」とコメントした。
この発言から約2年後、アイスホッケーでも最高レベルの対決が実現した。先月の「4 Nations Face-Off」の決勝戦、カナダ対アメリカの試合だ。この試合でマクデービッド選手は決勝ゴールを決め、カナダを優勝へと導いた。
On Tuesday, March 4th, 2025, I went to bed in the morning and got up at 4:30 p.m. PST. I stayed home all day.
The ice hockey game I watched on TV was between the Edmonton Oilers and the Anaheim Ducks. Since the Oilers had advanced to the Stanley Cup Final last season, I expected them to win today’s game. However, they ended up losing 2-6. In my opinion, the Oilers lost focus and lacked coordination among the players.
Nevertheless, the captain of the Oilers and one of the biggest stars in the NHL, Connor McDavid, recorded one goal and one assist tonight. Although his goal in this game didn’t contribute to a win, his smooth movement was worth watching.
Speaking of him, the last World Baseball Classic excited him. According to a Sportsnet article, he commented on the matchup between Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, saying, “I thought it was really cool. It’s what we’ve been asking for in hockey for a long time, right, best-on-best?”
About two years after that comment, a best-on-best matchup in ice hockey finally took place in the final game between Canada and the United States at the 4 Nations Face-Off held last month. In that game, McDavid scored the game-winning goal that secured the championship for Canada.
