現地時間2025年3月6日（木）、午前8時半に起きた。午前9時半ごろに家を出て、近所の図書館へ向かった。
昨日書いたように、今日は蟻の駆除を実施してもらう日だ。駆除の専門家が家にやってくる。強力な殺虫剤をスプレーすると思っていた私は、安全のために図書館などで時間を潰してから、家に戻る予定だった。
だが実際は、すぐ家に戻ることができた。専門家が台所や洗面所で使用したのは、スプレーではなくグルーガンだったからだ。薬剤が広がることはなく、安全面の心配はなかった。
どうやら、蟻の数がかなり多い場合に限って、スプレーを使用するらしい。昨日、台所や洗面所の物を片付けたが、スプレーをしないのであれば、片付ける必要はなかった。
私たちの家では、これまで毒餌を置いて蟻を駆除しようとしてきた。だが、ホストマザーが専門家から聞いた説明によると、私たちが使っていた毒餌は効果がないらしい。大きめの蟻に効くもので、私たちを悩ましている蟻はもっと小さい種類だという。
On Thursday, March 6th, 2025, I got up at 8:30 a.m. PST and left home around 9:30 a.m. to go to the library.
As I mentioned yesterday, professionals came to our home for ant treatment. During the treatment, I had to stay out for a certain amount of time because I thought the technicians would spray a strong insecticide, and I wanted to stay safe.
However, I didn’t have to wait long before returning home. My host mother let me know that I could come back earlier than expected. The technicians used a glue gun to apply the treatment at certain spots in the kitchen and bathroom. Since it didn’t spread, there was no safety concern.
The technicians told my host mother that spray would only be used if there were a large number of ants. Although we put away almost everything in the kitchen and bathroom yesterday just in case, it turned out to be unnecessary—we worried too much.
Additionally, the professionals told her that the ant baits we had been using weren’t effective for our situation. They were designed for larger ants, not the ones appearing in our home.
