アイスホッケーの試合をテレビ観戦した。ワシントン・キャピタルズとピッツバーグ・ペンギンズの一戦だ。
国際大会「4 Nations Face-Off」からまだ2日しか経っていないが、NHLのリーグ戦はもう始まっている。4 Nations Face-Offでアイスホッケーに興味をもった、私のような新規ファンからすればありがたい。高まったアイスホッケー熱を、リーグ戦にぶつけることができる。
ペンギンズのスターであるシドニー・クロスビー選手は、カナダ代表の主将として4 Nations Face-Offに出場していた。今日のリーグ戦にも出場し、ゴールを決めた。知っている選手が少ない自分にとって、名前を知っている選手のゴールを観ることができたのは嬉しかった。
アイスホッケーの試合の前、同じスポーツチャンネルではトロント・ブルージェイズのオープン戦を放送していた。久しぶりに野球をテレビで観た私は、なんとなく以前より、試合のテンポが遅く退屈に感じた。最近、アメリカンフットボールのスーパーボウルやアイスホッケーの4 Nations Face-Offを観て、展開の速いスポーツに慣れてしまったせいかもしれない。
それでも私にとって、野球は今でも一番好きなスポーツだ。そのうえで、MLBがルールを変更して人気を高めようとしているのも理解できる。ただ、細かいルール改正をするよりも、4 Nations Face-Offのように国際大会をシーズン中に開催するほうが、注目を集めるのに有効ではないかと思う。

I watched an ice hockey game on TV between the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The fact that a game took place just two days after the international competition, the 4 Nations Face-Off, was surprising. However, this scheduling could help the ice hockey league attract fans who recently became interested in the sport through the exciting matches in the 4 Nations Face-Off final, like me.
Pittsburgh Penguins’ star player Sidney Crosby, who also participated in the 4 Nations Face-Off as the captain of Team Canada, played and scored today. As someone who only knows the names of a few players, I was thrilled to see a goal by a player I recognized.
Before the hockey game, the same sports channel broadcasted a preseason game between the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays. It had been a while since I last watched a baseball game on TV, and for some reason, I found it slower-paced and more boring than before. This might be because I recently watched the Super Bowl, the most popular American football game, and the 4 Nations Face-Off, and I have gotten used to fast-paced sports.
Baseball is still my favorite sport, and I understand why Major League Baseball is trying to gain popularity by changing the game’s regulations. In my opinion, rather than making minor changes to the rules, baseball organizations should collaborate to hold the World Baseball Classic in the middle of the regular season—like the 4 Nations Face-Off—to attract even more attention.
