現地時間2025年3月16日（日）、13時に起きた。15時に家を出て、バンクーバーで友人と待ち合わせた。
友人と私が訪れたのは、バンクーバー・カナックスのホームアリーナ「ロジャース・アリーナ」だ。この会場で、ユタ・ホッケークラブとの試合を観戦した。友人はこれまでに何度もNHLの試合を生で観たことがあるが、私にとっては今回が初めてのNHL観戦だった。
試合はユタ・ホッケークラブが3-1で勝利した。カナックスファンにとっては悲惨な内容・結果だった。4分間連続のパワープレーという、絶好の得点機会を得たカナックスだったが、それを活かせず試合が終了した。
友人と私は、カナックスへの愚痴を話しながら家路についた。勝つに越したことはないが、残念な気持ちになるのもスポーツ観戦の一部だと私は思っている。応援しているチームが勝つとは限らないし、だからこそ観客は選手のプレーに集中し熱狂する。
今日一番驚いたのは、プレー中ではない時間のイベントだった。ホッケーの試合には、試合開始前、ピリオド間の休憩時間、プレーの合間の短い中断など、選手がプレーしていない時間帯が結構ある。そのタイミングで主催者は、音楽家による演奏や子供たちによるアイスホッケーの試合など、さまざまなショーを提供していた。そのおかげで観客は途中でだれることなく、試合を楽しむことができた。
試合開始前にあった、カナックスの選手紹介には特に衝撃を受けた。選手の写真がリンク上に映し出される演出は、アイスアリーナならではのものだった。
ロジャース・アリーナの収容人数は約1万9000人。大きすぎず小さすぎず、適度な規模のエンタメ施設だと思う。2階席に座っていた私だが、観戦中にリンクが遠すぎると感じることはなかった。
On Saturday, March 15, 2025, I got up at 1:00 p.m. PDT. I left home at 3:00 p.m. to meet my friend in Vancouver.
We visited Rogers Arena in downtown Vancouver to watch a professional ice hockey game between the Utah Hockey Club and the Vancouver Canucks. While my friend has attended several NHL games in person, this was my first time watching an NHL game live.
The performance and result were disappointing for Canucks fans, as the Utah Hockey Club won 3-1. Even though the Canucks had a four-minute power play at one point, they failed to take advantage of it.
After the game, as we left the arena, my friend and I complained about how poorly the Canucks had performed tonight. However, I believe that frustration is just as much a part of watching sports as excitement. No one can guarantee that the team I support will win. That’s why people focus on the players’ performances and get excited to see great plays.
What surprised me most today was the entertainment during breaks. In hockey games, there are many moments when players are not on the ice, such as pregame, intermissions between periods, and short breaks during play. The event organizers constantly provided various forms of entertainment, such as live music from musicians and youth hockey games.
The player introductions for the Canucks especially blew my mind. The host displayed each player’s picture on the ice rink, which was something I had never seen in other sports. I found this to be a unique feature of ice hockey arenas.
Rogers Arena accommodates about 19,000 spectators. I thought its capacity was moderate, as I didn’t feel that the rink was too far away, even though my seat was on the second level.
