現地時間2025年3月17日（月）、午前5時に起きた。17時半に家を出て、弓道の練習に参加した。
午前中、ホストマザーと雑談をした。話したのは、前日のバンクーバー・カナックスの試合について。アイスホッケーに興味を持ち始めてから、友人やホストマザーとの会話が弾むようになった気がする。中にはアイスホッケーに興味のないカナダ人もいるが。
ホストマザーとは、家に出没していた蟻についても話した。今月上旬に専門業者が駆除処理をしてくれて以来、台所や洗面所で見かける蟻の数が劇的に減った。駆除処理の効果は想像以上だ。
虫のつながりで、ホストマザーがトコジラミについて教えてくれた。アメリカで宿泊した際、この虫が服にひっついていたことがあるそうだ。トコジラミはアジア系の人のところに集まりやすい、という真偽不明の情報もホストマザーは語っていた。私自身は今まで旅行中に気を付けたことはなかったが、とりあえずこれからは気をつけようと思う。
On Sunday, March 16, 2025, I got up at 5:00 a.m. PDT. I left home at 5:30 p.m. for Japanese archery practice as usual.
In the morning, I chatted with my host mother about the game for the Vancouver Canucks yesterday. Since I became interested in ice hockey, I’ve found it easier to talk not only with her but also with my friends here than before—although I did meet a Canadian who doesn’t know much about the sport.
My host mother and I also talked about the ants that had been appearing in our home. Since technicians came and applied a treatment using a glue gun, the number of ants in the kitchen and bathroom has drastically declined. I was surprised by how effective the treatment was.
She also told me about another insect—bedbugs. She found bedbugs on her clothing while in the United States. I’d never really thought about them when traveling, but now I feel I should be a bit more careful in places where I stay.
