2025年4月17日（木）、朝起きて、午前11時ごろに家を出た。保険会社の人と会うためだ。午後は、横浜の弓道場で練習をした。
その保険会社の人とは、不定期に会っている。年に1回くらいの頻度で、主な目的は、私が入っている保険の契約内容を確認するためだ。
毎年会っているうちに、話す内容が幅広くなってきた。例えば、カナダや屋久島での私の暮らしぶりについて。保険会社の人が行った旅行の話、その人の地元の話、さらには野球についても話す。
その担当者としては、「仕事」として親しく接しているはずだ。それを踏まえたとしても、私としては気軽に会話できる人がいるのはありがたい。バンクーバーから日本に帰ってきて以来、冷たい人に何人か会ってきたから、ありがたみをより一層感じる。
On Thursday, April 17th, 2025, I got up in the morning and left home around 11:00 a.m. to meet with an employee of an insurance company. In the afternoon, I practiced Japanese archery at a dojo in Yokohama.
I’ve been meeting with the insurance company employee irregularly, about once a year. The main reason is that she helps me review the details of the contract I have with the company.
As we continued to meet every year, our conversations expanded beyond insurance to personal topics, like my life in Canada and Yakushima Island, her recent trip, her hometown, and baseball in Japan.
I suppose she tries to be friendly so that I’ll maintain the contract with the company. That said, I’m grateful that she talks to me in a friendly manner—especially since I’ve come across some rather unfriendly people in Japan since returning from Vancouver.
