On Monday, April 29th, 2025, I got up around 3:00 a.m. and left home at 6:00 a.m. to walk around the Motomachi district on Izu Oshima Island. After that, I practiced flying a drone at a school on the island.

During my morning walk, I came across some familiar flowers I had known when I lived on Yakushima Island, such as Japanese snowbell, Japanese cheesewood, and Yeddo hawthorn. Based on my observations, these same flowers seem to bloom here about a month later than they did on Yakushima Island.

On the other hand, I came across flowers I had never seen on Yakushima Island, such as Hakoneutsugi. All the Hakoneutsugi flowers I saw today were white. According to a website by the Kyushu Research Center of the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, their color gradually changes from white to light crimson, and eventually to crimson. Another type of white flower, the lace shrub, had also started to bloom. I had never seen its tiny flowers on Yakushima either.

I paid attention not only to plants but also to the scenery, as the weather was clear. From near the port in the Motomachi district, Mt. Fuji and the mountains of the Izu Peninsula, such as Mt. Amagi and Mt. Omuro, were clearly visible in the morning. Later, while taking an outdoor public bath there around sunset, I looked again at the highest mountain in Japan.
