2025年4月28日（月）、午前2時に起きた。午前7時に家を出て、竹芝へ向かった。伊豆大島行きの船に乗るためだ。船は午前9時ごろに出発し、およそ1時間半後、島の港に到着した。
観光というよりも、ドローンの操縦を学ぶことが目的で伊豆大島に来た。この島にあるドローンスクールで、今日と明日の2日間、授業を受ける。国家資格取得に必要な試験も受ける予定だ。
2人のインストラクターが授業と試験を実施してくれた。問題なく進んだ。2人とも伊豆大島に住んでいて、この島の文化・自然・地理などを教えてくれた。
私が以前住んでいた屋久島同様、コンビニはない。島をぐるりと一周する道路が交通の要になっていることも、2つの島の共通点だ。
一方で、伊豆大島ならではの話も聞いた。キョンという小型の鹿が多く生息している点だ。この動物は日本に元々いたわけではなく、伊豆大島の動物園から逃げ出して繁殖・拡大したそうだ。2023年のALSOKのリリースによると、キョンは農業などに悪影響を与えており、ドローンを使って居場所を特定するサービスを開始したという。このサービスによって、捕獲を支援するそうだ。
On Monday, April 28th, 2025, I got up around 2:00 a.m. and left home at 7:00 a.m. to head to the Tokyo Takeshiba Terminal to take a ship to Izu Oshima Island. The ship I boarded departed around 9:00 a.m. from the terminal, and after about an hour and a half, it arrived at a port on the island.
I came here not for sightseeing but to learn how to pilot a drone. There is a drone school on the island, and I will attend lessons today and tomorrow, taking tests necessary to obtain the national drone qualification.
Thanks to two instructors, today’s lesson and test went smoothly without any trouble. Both instructors live on the island and shared a lot of local information from cultural, natural, and geographical perspectives. Their explanations reminded me of my experience living on Yakushima Island, as I noticed some common features between the two islands, such as the absence of convenience stores and the important role played by a coastal road circling each island.
On the other hand, I also noticed a difference: Izu Oshima Island is home to many Reeves’ muntjacs. Although I haven’t seen any myself, one of the drone school instructors told me about them. These animals are not native to Japan; they escaped from a zoo on the island and have since spread and increased in number. According to a 2023 news release by ALSOK, these small deer have had a negative impact on local agriculture, and the company has begun using drones to locate and help capture them.
