2025年5月15日（木）、午前10時半に起きた。夕方に家を出て、神奈川県立図書館まで歩いた。
なにか特別な理由があって、ここに来たわけではない。家で作業をするのに飽きたので、図書館でパソコン作業をしたかった。この神奈川県立図書館は2022年にオープンした新しい施設で、私にとっては初めて訪れる場所だ。
実際に訪れてみると、一般的な図書館と一味違うことが分かった。この図書館は大量の本を所蔵するよりも、地元住民向けの読書・勉強・作業スペースを提供することに、主眼を置いているのだろう。建物の面積のわりに座席数が多かった。実際、地元の学生をはじめ、多くの人が本を読んだり勉強したりしていた。
座席数だけでなく、座席の種類の豊富さという点でも充実している。一般的な長いテーブルのほか、集中して学習するための個室、さらには飲食が可能なスペースなどがある。カフェも併設している。
On Thursday, May 15th, 2025, I got up at 10:30 a.m. and left home in the evening to walk to the Kanagawa Prefectural Library.
Since I was tired of doing my tasks at home, I visited the library to work on a computer. Until today, I had never been to the new building, which opened in 2022, although I had visited the former Kanagawa Prefectural Library building before.
As I walked through each floor, I realized that this library prioritizes providing space for reading, working, and studying over storing a large number of books. It has a large amount of seating relative to its overall area, and indeed, many people—including local students—were reading or studying there.
What impressed me was not just the number of seats, but also their variety. The library offers several types of spaces: long tables near bookshelves for individual study, private rooms for more focused work, and designated areas where users are allowed to eat and drink.
The old building of the Kanagawa Prefectural Library was designed by Kunio Maekawa, a renowned architect in Japan. According to the library’s website, the former building will be renovated and reopened in a few years.
