2025年5月18日（日）、13時に起きた。15時ごろに家を出て、神奈川県立図書館へ向かった。3日前に初めて訪れた図書館だ。その日がきっかけで私は、この場所が好きになった。
図書館で面白そうなイベントが開かれており、それに参加した。イベントの概要は以下の通り。まず、図書館の一室に、匿名の手紙が数十枚並んでいる。本もたくさん置かれている。参加者はその中から1通の手紙を選び、それに合いそうな本を1冊選ぶ。最後に、その手紙とその本について、イベントのスタッフと話すという流れだ。
自分は年上の男性スタッフ2人と話した。女子高校生の参加者も加わって、4人での会になった。自分とその女子高生が選んだ、手紙や本はもちろんのこと、4人の経験や考えについても話した。イベントの本質は手紙や本そのものではなく、図書館のなかに小さなコミュニティをつくり出すことだったのだろう。手紙と本は、そのきっかけに過ぎなかった。
ちなみに、私が選んだ本は「読んでいない本について堂々と語る方法」（ピエール・バイヤール著、大浦康介訳）だ。最初は怪しい本だと思ったが、結局イベント後に借りることにした。イベントで話した人が「好きな本のトップ3に入る」というようなことを言っていたからだ。
On Sunday, May 18th, 2025, I got up at 1:00 p.m. and left home around 3:00 p.m. to head to the Kanagawa Prefectural Library, which I had visited three days earlier and had come to like.
An interesting event was held at the library, and I ended up taking part in it. The event consisted of several stages. First, a large number of anonymous letters and various books were laid out in a room of the library. Each participant, myself included, chose one letter and then selected a book they felt matched it. Finally, attendees discussed their chosen letters and books with the event staff.
I spoke with two male staff members who were older than me. Another participant—a female high school student—also joined our discussion group. We talked not only about the letters and books she and I had selected, but also about our personal experiences and thoughts.
I came away with the impression that the true purpose of the event wasn’t the letters or the books themselves, but rather the creation of a small, temporary community within the library. The letters and books simply served as prompts for meaningful conversation.
For reference, the book I chose was How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read by Pierre Bayard. Although I was initially skeptical, I decided to borrow it after the event, as one of the staff members I spoke with was like, “It’s probably one of my top three favorite books.”
