現地時間2025年7月6日（日）、午前10時ごろに起きた。夕方、自宅のあるニューウエストミンスターを歩いた。
最初に訪れたのはクイーンズ・パーク。グーグルマップで見る限り、この街で最大の公園のようだ。園内の森には、針葉樹が林立している。ここに限らず、バンクーバー都市圏の公園には針葉樹が多く立っており、それは東京近郊の公園と異なる特徴だ。
ありがたいことに、この公園には公衆トイレがある。ここのトイレは、1つの空間に個室がずらっと並んでおり、性別関係なく誰でも利用できる。いわゆる「ユニバーサル」な設計だ。私は、同じ形式のトイレをエドモントンの図書館で使ったことはあるものの、日本ではまだ経験したことがない。
クイーンズ・パークを歩いたあと、グレンブルック・ラヴィーン・パークという別の場所にも行った。遊具というよりも、森のなかの遊歩道をメインに据えた公園だ。ここを含め、渓谷のなかに整備された公園が、バンクーバー都市圏には多くある。こうした公園を歩いていると、東京の等々力渓谷を思い出す。
On Sunday, July 6th, 2025, I got up around 10:00 a.m. PDT and walked around some parks in the evening.
First, I visited Queen’s Park, which might be the biggest park in New Westminster, from what I saw on Google Maps. After walking through a forested area in the park, I was reminded that conifer trees cover large parts of parks in Vancouver, which is one of the differences compared to parks around Tokyo.
There’s a public washroom in the park, and I was glad because finding public toilets can be challenging in Vancouver. The bathroom in the park is a universal multi-stall washroom, which welcomes all visitors regardless of gender. I’ve used the same type of washroom at a library in Edmonton, though I’ve never experienced it in Japan.
After walking through the park, I went to another one called Glenbrook Ravine Park. It’s a park consisting mainly of a forest trail rather than amenities. I believe that parks designed in ravines, similar to Todoroki Valley in Tokyo, can be found in several places in Vancouver.
