現地時間2025年7月11日（金）、午前7時に起きた。夕方に家を出た。サイエンス・ワールドからクーパーズ・パーク付近まで、入り江沿いを歩いた。
クーパーズ・パークのあたりで、ワインレッド色の花を見かけた。クロバナロウバイの仲間だと思う。優雅な花を咲かせているのだが、通りすがりの人たちはあまり気に留めていなかった。
屋久島で見た、オガタマノキに似ている。ただし、似ているのは形で、色や開花時期は違う。
今日見たこの花は、多くの虫を呼び寄せていた。虫の種類は分からないけれど、ゴキブリを小さくしたような虫だ。その多くが花の内側に入り込み、狭い隙間のなかで動かなくなっていた。恐らく死んでいたのだろう。花と虫の間で何が起こっているのか、私としてはとても気になった。
On Friday, July 11th, 2025, I got up around 7:00 a.m. PDT and left home in the evening to walk along the north side of False Creek, from Science World to around Coopers’ Park.
Near the park, I saw wine-red flowers that might have been from Sweetshrub. These elegant blossoms were striking, although hardly anyone walking by seemed interested in them.
The shape of the flowers reminded me of the Ogatamanoki trees I’ve seen on Yakushima Island, although they differ in color and blooming season.
The flowers seemed to attract certain insects that looked a bit like cockroaches but were smaller. Many of these insects crawled inside the flowers and got stuck in narrow spaces within them, and it seemed as if they had died there. I was very curious about what was happening between the Sweetshrub and these insects.
