現地時間2025年7月12日（土）、午前9時に起きた。午前11時ごろに家を出て、バンクーバーのチャイナタウンへ向かった。毎年恒例だという、チャイナタウンの祭りを訪れるためだ。ホストマザーとその友人も一緒だった。
露店やフードトラックが立ち並び、食べ物や小物などを販売していた。祭り会場のステージ前には、獅子舞などのパフォーマンスを鑑賞する人たちの姿があった。
ある店がロブスターロールを売っていた。ノバスコシア産のロブスターを使っているという。私はそこで初めて、ノバスコシアがロブスターで有名だということを知った。
日本食を提供する店もいくつか、祭りに参加していた。そのうちの1つが「ジャパドッグ」。カナダやアメリカで展開しているチェーン店で、日本風の具材を乗せたホットドッグを提供しているようだ。自分はまだ食べたことがないけれど、ホストマザーによるとバンクーバーで人気だという。
会場では警察官の姿が目立った。今年4月にバンクーバーで発生した事件を踏まえて、警察官が不審者に目を光らせているのだろうと、ホストマザーの友人は語っていた。この事件では、フィリピン系の祭りに車が突っ込み、11人が亡くなったそうだ。
On Saturday, July 12th, 2025, I got up around 9:00 a.m. PDT and left home at about 11:00 a.m. to go to the annual Chinatown festival in Vancouver with my host mother and her friend.
The festival took place on the streets of the neighborhood, and many people gathered to watch performances, such as a lion dance, on a stage set up at an intersection. Numerous vendors had set up tents and food trucks to sell food, accessories, and other items.
A food truck I was interested in was selling lobster rolls made with Nova Scotia lobster, which made me realize that the region is famous for its lobsters.
I also saw vendors offering Japanese dishes, and one of the them was Japadog, a chain restaurant in Canada and the United States that serves hot dogs topped with Japanese ingredients. Although I’ve never tried their food, my host mother said this chain is popular in Vancouver.
I noticed quite a few police officers watching over the festival. My host mother’s friend guessed that they were keeping an eye out for suspicious people, given the car-ramming attack that happened at a Filipino festival in April this year, which reportedly resulted in 11 deaths.
