On Thursday, September 11th, 2025, I got up at noon PDT and went out in the afternoon.
I visited a neighborhood called Renfrew-Collingwood and saw Vancouver Fire Hall No. 15, which is located near Renfrew Community Park. Since I had recently been researching architecture in Canada, the fire hall caught my eye.
According to the Vancouver Heritage Foundation, the building was originally constructed in 1913 and was rehabilitated in 2012. It mainly consists of two structures: the original building on the west side of the property and a newer one on the east side. What intrigued me was that the fire hall is recognized as a heritage building—something quite uncommon in Japan, as far as I know. However, when I compared its current appearance with a photo taken before the rehabilitation, I noticed that the exterior had changed significantly.
The current exterior was impressive and closely matched my image of a traditional Western-style building. It could even serve as an icon of the neighborhood. In particular, the hose tower on the corner of the classical-style building stood out when I viewed it from the northwest.
