現地時間2025年9月12日（金）、午前7時半ごろに起きた。午前中、公園でボランティア活動に参加した。いつものように、外来植物の駆除に取り組んだ。
ボランティア活動での楽しみは、外来植物を駆除することだけではない。他の参加者から、自分の知らない知識を教えてもらうことができる。今日耳にしたのは、ジョシュア・ツリーについて。南カリフォルニアの砂漠で見ることができるという。砂漠の植物に馴染みがない私にとっては、とても面白い話だった。
こんな具合に、ボランティアの人たちと交流する機会が結構ある。これが私にとって、活動に参加する動機の一つだ。現地の人と話すことで、私の英語力を上達させたい。自分の英語のレベルはまだまだ、流暢というにはほど遠い。
もっとも今日は、英語での会話に苦労する場面があった。英語力を磨くうえで避けることができない過程なのだろうが、それでも気分は下がる。
On Friday, September 12th, 2025, I got up around 7:30 a.m. PDT and joined a volunteer activity in the morning, where I helped remove invasive plants growing in a park.
This volunteer activity gives me opportunities not only to pull out plants but also to learn from the knowledge that other members share. Today, one member told me that he had seen Joshua trees in a desert in Southern California. It was an interesting topic for me, since I’m not very familiar with desert vegetation, like most Japanese people.
Through experiences like this, I have chances to communicate with other volunteers. In fact, this is one of my motivations to participate, because my English is still far from fluent, and I really want to improve it by talking with local people.
That said, I struggled with a conversation with one member today because I couldn’t express my thoughts well. These difficulties always make me feel depressed, though I understand that going through such steps helps me brush up on my language skills.
