現地時間2025年12月17日（水）、午前10時ごろに起きた。午後、スタンレー・パークを歩いた。
海岸で2羽の鴎を目撃した。蟹をめぐって、両者が争っていた。
岸からやや離れた場所には、黒い鴨の姿があった。群れをなして、海に浮かんでいた。ホオジロガモ（英名：Common Goldeneye）かキタホオジロガモ（英名：Barrow’s Goldeneye）のどちらかだろう。
「Goldeneye」という名前で私が思い浮かべるのは、バンクーバーの女子プロホッケーチーム「バンクーバー・ゴールデンアイズ」だ。この名称について、チームの公式ウェブサイトによると、「ブリティッシュコロンビア州の沿岸水域や森林内の湖沼に生息する、印象的な鳥であるホオジロガモに着想を得ている」という。
このチームは、Goldeneyeの目を基にした絵をロゴにしている。鋭い目つきが印象的で、私はこの鳥のことを猛禽類もしくは架空の鳥だと、勝手に想像していた。今日初めて、Goldeneyeが鴨だと知った。
On Wednesday, December 17th, 2025, I got up around 10:00 a.m. PST and went out in the afternoon to walk around Stanley Park.
As I walked along English Bay, I saw people who seemed to be birders observing birds along the shore of the bay. For example, I spotted gulls fighting over a crab that one of them had caught.
A group of diving ducks was floating on the bay, and I found their blackish bodies cool-looking. They were females, either Common Goldeneyes or Barrow’s Goldeneyes.
Speaking of Goldeneyes, a professional women’s hockey team in Vancouver that is playing its inaugural season this year is named the Vancouver Goldeneyes. According to their website, “The name Goldeneyes draws inspiration from the Common Goldeneye, a striking bird native to British Columbia’s coastal waters and forested lakes.” This surprised me, because before I learned about Common Goldeneyes, the logo and name of the franchise had made me imagine that goldeneyes were raptors or imaginary birds rather than ducks.
