いつものように、家で野球を観た。シアトル・マリナーズとトロント・ブルージェイズのシリーズ第6戦だ。ブルージェイズが6対2でマリナーズを下し、シリーズは3勝3敗になった。明日の第7戦で勝ったチームが、今年のワールドシリーズに進出する。
試合の実況を聞くなかで、英語の熟語を1つ学んだ。「all hands on deck」という表現だ。総力戦という意味らしい。両チームの命運を決める明日の試合は、総力戦になるだろう。
同じような状況が、日本のプロ野球でも起こっている。福岡ソフトバンクホークスと北海道日本ハムファイターズが戦っているクライマックシリーズでは、今日の時点で両チームが日本シリーズ進出に王手をかけている。明日のシリーズ最終戦は総力戦となるかもしれない。
On Sunday, October 19th, 2025, I got up around noon PDT and stayed home all day.
As usual, I watched baseball on my computer through a sports network’s streaming service I subscribe to. The game I watched was Game 6 of the series between the Seattle Mariners and the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays defeated the Mariners 6–2, tying the series at 3–3. This means that Game 7 tomorrow will be the decisive game to determine which team advances to the World Series this year.
By listening to the commentary during the broadcast, I learned an English idiom: “all hands on deck.” Since there will be no games after Game 7, both teams are expected to make full use of all available players.
A similar situation is unfolding in the Japanese professional baseball playoffs. The decisive game to determine which franchise advances to the championship series, known as the Japan Series, will take place tomorrow. That game, too, may turn into an all-hands-on-deck battle.
