現地時間2026年1月18日（日）、午前8時半に起きた。朝から外出した。澄んだ空を、1羽のハクトウワシが旋回していた。
この日、私はヴァンデュッセン植物園を訪れた。針葉樹について学ぶことが、主な目的だった。木の名前を示す看板が設置されているこの植物園は、植物の学習にうってつけの場所だ。バンクーバーの普通の公園には、こうしたネームプレートがほとんどない。
植物園の一角に、ベイマツ（Douglas fir）の巨大な木々がまとまって植わっている。ベイマツは樹皮が独特で、魅力的だ。
ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州の木であるベイスギ（Western redcedar）も私の目を引いた。幕のように垂れ下がる葉からは、威厳を感じる。園内の展示によると、「ベイスギは、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州沿岸部の先住民族にとって最も重要な植物である」とのこと。「ベイスギの柔らかい木材が、トーテムポールに使用される」との説明もあった。
On Sunday, January 18th, 2026, I got up around 8:30 a.m. PST and went out from the morning into the afternoon. Under the clear sky, a bald eagle was circling overhead.
The place I visited that day was VanDusen Botanical Garden, a popular destination among local residents. I had been there once before, and the purpose of that previous visit was to learn about conifer trees. The garden has signs on many trees showing their names, which regular parks in Vancouver usually do not have, so it is very helpful for me to become more familiar with plants.
Among the various conifer trees planted there, a cluster of huge Douglas fir trees occupies part of the garden, suggesting that the species is locally significant. Although I am not sure how to properly identify the tree, I found the texture of its bark unique. The height of the trees was outstanding without a doubt.
Western redcedar, the provincial tree of British Columbia, could also be seen. Its leaves hanging down like curtains gave it a dignified appearance. “Western redcedar is the single most important plant to British Columbia’s coastal First Nations,” says one of the displays in the garden.
