On Thursday, January 22nd, 2026, I got up around 11:00 a.m. PST and went out in the afternoon.
While walking around a park in Metro Vancouver, I spotted various types of birds. Two species in particular stood out to me.
One of them might have been a long-billed dowitcher, which I had never seen before. Tens of birds, likely of the same species, were gathered along the lakeshore, plunging their bills into the mudflats or the water.
The other was a chestnut-backed chickadee, which happened to perch on a tree right next to me. I do not usually pay much attention to chickadees, but the one I saw today was different from those I normally encounter, as it had a brown patch on its back, just as its name suggests.
