家で、冬季五輪の男子アイスホッケーの試合を観た。欧州のライバル関係にある、スウェーデンとフィンランドの一戦だ。両国サポーターが試合会場でつくりだす熱気は、画面越しにも伝わってきた。五輪を見ていると、欧州におけるアイスホッケーの人気の高さがよく分かる。
日本ではアイスホッケーよりも、フィギュアスケートの方が人気だ。これまで浅田真央元選手や羽生結弦元選手などを輩出してきた。こうしたトップスケーターに続き、鍵山優真選手と佐藤駿選手が今日、男子シングルでメダルを獲得した。
日本のフィギュアスケート選手は意外と、バンクーバーでも有名だ。今日話したアメリカ出身の女性たちは、羽生元選手だけでなく鍵山選手のことも知っていた。
On Friday, February 13th, 2026, I got up around 6:00 a.m. PST and took part in volunteer work at a park.
At home, I watched a men’s ice hockey game between European rivals, Sweden and Finland, at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Supporters from both countries gathered at an arena in Milano, and I was impressed by how lively it was. While I usually learn about ice hockey culture in North America through the National Hockey League (NHL), the Olympics suggest that this sport is popular in Europe as well.
For many Japanese people, figure skating is a bigger deal than ice hockey. Japan has historically produced outstanding skaters, such as Mao Asada and Yuzuru Hanyu. Following those legendary skaters, Yuma Kagiyama and Shun Sato won medals in the men’s singles today.
Through conversations I have had in Vancouver, I have been slightly surprised to find that Japanese figure skaters are well known here. Women from the United States whom I talked with today know not only Yuzuru Hanyu but also Yuma Kagiyama.
